Australian Natural Protection
The problem we couldn't unsee

Formulated for the shelf, not for you

Go to your bathroom cabinet and read the back of anything in it. Petroleum jelly. Synthetic waxes. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. "Fragrance," a single word legally allowed to hide a long list of chemicals no one has to disclose.

These products weren't formulated for your body. They were formulated to survive a global supply chain, diluted and preserved until effectiveness became whatever could be manufactured cheaply at scale.

Here's the part that should sting. Over 90% of the Eucalyptus oil used in Australia is imported, much of it a byproduct of overseas paper production, industrially rectified just to reach the minimum tradeable standard. The country that gave the world the eucalypt now buys it back, weakened.

"When Eucalyptus is used as a decongestant, when you're breathing this into your lungs, the provenance, the purity and the extraction process become incredibly important."

We started with the research

Not the product. The proof.

Etto didn't begin with a formula. It began with a feasibility study, working through the government and clinical research on Australia's two great medicinal plants.

Terpinen-4-ol, the active compound in Tea Tree, performed comparably to 5% Benzoyl Peroxide on acne in a landmark trial, with fewer side effects. 1,8-cineole, the active in Eucalyptus, is the ingredient in a clinically registered respiratory medicine in Germany.

The problem was never nature. The problem was what the supply chain did to it. So the answer wasn't another product. It was control.

"I started Etto with a very clear mission: to clean up personal care. The world doesn't need any more formulated products, unless there's a problem with the ones already on the market. And there is."

Soil to oil

We own our supply chain, from the ground up

Our Tea Tree grows across our farms in northern New South Wales, on Bundjalung Country. Our Blue Mallee Eucalyptus grows on our farm in the Western Australian wheatbelt, a variety so naturally rich in Cineole it comes out of steam extraction at 88%, when most of the world's oil manages around 60% and has to be industrially stripped and reconstructed to pass.

We harvest the new leaf growth, steam-extract on the farm, and return the spent biomass to the soil. No third parties. No opportunity for adulteration. Nothing added that doesn't belong.

A practical toolkit

Built around two compounds, at concentrations that work

Everything we make is built around Terpinen-4-ol and 1,8-cineole, at the levels that actually do something, not the trace amounts that just make an ingredient listable.

One spray for cuts, bites, breakouts and feet. One wash for every body in the house. One balm from cradle cap to cracked heels. A pocket inhaler that clears a blocked head with nothing but 88%-cineole Eucalyptus.

"There's no other essential oil with this level of Terpinen-4-ol. It works by destroying the cell's defences, an action so fundamental that bacteria can't develop resistance to it."

Words from Andrea

Nature has given us these incredible natural substances to help solve the problems of living in Australia: bites, burns, reef cuts. The solution was growing here all along. We just want to make sure we don't mess with it, and bring it through in its purest form.

There's brilliant marketing behind very poor products out there. I'd love to see great marketing attached to great products, which is exactly what we're building at Etto.
