Everywhere you turn, there's a new electrolyte powder or beverage promising the ultimate rehydration. The commercial beverage industry is worth billions and growing fast, fuelled by strong consumer interest in fitness and wellness. Tesco, a chain that's been trading since 1919, recently reported a 175% jump in hydration product sales, with its range reportedly quadrupling since 2024. The question worth asking is: do we actually need any of this?
What electrolytes are supposed to do
Electrolyte products are marketed as a convenient way to replenish the minerals lost through sweat and physical activity. They typically come as a powdered mix, though premade liquid beverages and dissolvable tablets are just as common. They contain a combination of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, designed to be absorbed by the gut quickly to rebalance fluid and mineral levels. Collectively, these minerals are known as electrolytes, and they carry an electrical charge that's essential for things like muscle contraction, nerve signalling, regulating heart rhythm, and keeping fluid properly balanced inside and outside your cells.
According to Harvard's Nutrition Source, what started as a product for professional athletes and serious endurance trainers has since expanded to a much broader audience: the casual fitness enthusiast, which now includes essentially anyone who's laced up a pair of sneakers for a weekly workout. Rebranded as "hydration drinks," many now claim to hydrate even better than water itself.
The trouble is that these increasingly viral drinks have drifted a long way from being genuine wellness products. Many are sugary, caffeinated, and carb-heavy, and worse, some don't even contain the right ratio of minerals to actually rehydrate you effectively.
What's actually in them?
Most electrolyte powders and beverages are built around a core set of minerals:
- Sodium chloride (table salt) β the primary mineral lost through sweat, and the one most responsible for helping your body retain water
- Potassium (often as potassium chloride or phosphate) β essential for muscle function and preventing cramps
- Magnesium (citrate or oxide) β supports nerve function and muscle relaxation
- Calcium (carbonate or lactate) β supports bone health and muscle contraction
There's genuine science behind why these products often include a small amount of sugar alongside the minerals. Glucose activates a transport mechanism in the gut called sodium-glucose co-transport, which pulls sodium, and the water that follows it, into the bloodstream faster than salt or water alone. It's the same principle behind oral rehydration solutions used in hospitals to treat severe dehydration from illnesses like cholera or gastroenteritis, where a very specific ratio of glucose to salt is used deliberately. In a well-formulated electrolyte drink, that mechanism is doing real physiological work.
The problem is that off-the-shelf products rarely stop there. That core mineral list is usually padded out with sweeteners, flavour enhancers, additives, and preservatives your body is better off without. Common additions include:
- Glucose or dextrose β added partly for taste, but also because they trigger that same water-and-sodium absorption mechanism
- Stevia or monk fruit β popular in "sugar-free" versions, and generally considered safe, naturally-derived options
- Sucralose or erythritol β synthetic or highly processed sweeteners, which sit in a different category to the plant-derived options above
- Flavourings, preservatives, and anti-caking agents β added for shelf life and to stop powders clumping
- Caffeine and extra carbohydrates β increasingly common additions that turn what's marketed as a "health" drink into something considerably less healthy
Do most people need them?
For most people, no. A healthy, balanced diet already provides all the electrolytes your body needs, and your kidneys are remarkably good at keeping mineral levels in check regardless, excreting the excess when you've had too much salt, and holding onto water when levels run low.
There are genuine situations where extra electrolyte intake matters more:
- Regular sauna use
- High-intensity or endurance exercise lasting longer than about an hour, especially in heat or with heavy sweating, for anything shorter or more moderate, plain water is more than adequate
- Illness involving significant fluid loss, such as gastroenteritis, vomiting, or diarrhoea
- Certain medical conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), or recovery from intestinal surgery, and some medications like diuretics
It's also worth knowing the warning signs of a genuine electrolyte imbalance, since they're easy to mistake for general tiredness: muscle cramps or weakness, headaches, dizziness, an irregular heartbeat, sudden fatigue, nausea, or confusion. If you're experiencing several of these together, especially alongside heavy fluid loss, that's a reasonable prompt to look at electrolyte intake specifically rather than just drinking more water.
One extra nuance worth flagging: during genuinely long endurance efforts, drinking large volumes of plain water without replacing sodium can dilute your blood sodium to dangerously low levels, a condition called hyponatremia. It's rare, but it's the reason serious endurance guidelines focus on balanced fluid and electrolyte replacement together, not just "drink more water."
Natural, easy, and cheap ways to stay hydrated
- Drink water daily for the vast majority of everyday activity, it's genuinely all you need
- Salt your food with a quality mineral salt, rather than iodised or heavily processed table salt that's been stripped of its naturally occurring trace minerals. A little natural salt is good for you; a lot of it from processed food is not
- Eat bananas as a good natural source of potassium
- Drink coconut water, which naturally contains potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium in reasonable amounts, without the syrupy additives or artificial sweeteners found in commercial drinks (it's genuinely lower in sodium than a sports drink, though it isn't sodium-free)
- Try mineral-rich herbal teas if plain water gets boring try nettle, rooibos, moringa, and lemongrass are all worth reaching for, both for hydration and their natural mineral content
- Make your own electrolyte drink at home such as a simple mix of water, a pinch of salt, a splash of honey or sugar, and a little orange juice or coconut water gives you the same sodium-glucose absorption benefit as commercial products, for a fraction of the cost and none of the additives
