Eucalyptus has long been included in traditional home remedies as well as over-the-counter pharmaceuticals for treating nasal congestion, sinusitis and allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. A 2025 systematic review set out to evaluate how effective eucalyptus can be and if it holds true in clinical evidence. The results demonstrate a credible case for using eucalyptus for hay fever.Β
What the researchers did
The study was a systematic review, the gold standard in research because it considers every published study available in databases that have ever done research or trials on the topic of hay fever, allergic rhinitis and eucalyptus oil and cineole. Out of 1772 studies, three clinical human studies met all protocol and were reviewed.
What the data showed
Combining results across those three trials, eucalyptus oil produced a statistically significant improvement in quality of life for people with allergic rhinitis. Researchers measured how much hay fever disrupts sleep, daily activity, and comfort, not just symptom counts on paper. It also showed a reduction in total nasal symptom scores, covering the classic hay fever cluster of sneezing, congestion, and itching. In plain terms: the direction and size of the effect looked real and consistent.
Why this matters for hay fever specifically
Allergic rhinitis is fundamentally an inflammatory overreaction, the immune system responding to pollen or other allergens by inflaming and irritating the nasal lining. Eucalyptus oil's main active compound, 1,8-cineole, has documented anti-inflammatory properties, which gives the quality-of-life findings a plausible mechanism rather than leaving them as an unexplained correlation. That combination, a real biological rationale plus supportive clinical data, is a reasonably strong position for what's still often dismissed as a purely folk remedy.
Why hay fever sufferers might give it a go
For a chronic, seasonal nuisance with limited great options beyond antihistamines, nasal sprays, and avoidance, a low-risk, plausible, and clinically-supported adjunct is a meaningful thing to have in the toolkit, as a complementary measure worth considering.
