Can a Walk in the Forest Really Boost Your Immune System?

For decades, doctors in Japan have prescribed something unexpected for mental health and overall wellbeing: a walk in the forest. You may have heard of it. It's called shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing." The prescription isn’t to go for a hike, run or to get exercise, it is simply to spend slow, unhurried time among trees. It sounds more like folk wisdom than medicine, but a series of studies led by Dr. Qing Li at Nippon Medical School applied empirical analysis to give it a scientific understanding and the outcomes demonstrate the forest really does something measurable to the body.

What did the studies measure?

The research centres on a specific immune cell: the natural killer (NK) cell. NK cells are part of the body's first line of defence, and they specialise in detecting and destroying virus-infected cells and early cancer cells. Higher NK activity in a person is generally considered a good sign for immune health.

In one of Dr. Qing Li’s studies, twelve healthy men in their late 30s to mid-50s took a three-day, two-night trip into three different forests around Tokyo, walking about two hours a day. Researchers drew their blood before the trip and again during it, measuring NK cell activity along with the levels of three cancer-fighting proteins the cells produce including perforin, granulysin, and granzymes.

Nearly every person (11 of 12) showed an increase in NK activity after time in the forest, around a 50% increase, along with more NK cells and higher levels of those cancer-fighting proteins circulating in their blood.

A follow-up, broader study extended this work to both men and women, adding a longer follow-up period and a comparison condition: a trip to a city as a regular tourist instead of a forest. The forest trips again boosted NK activity and related immune markers, while urinary adrenaline, a marker of stress, dropped. Interestingly, the immune boost wasn't fleeting: elevated NK activity was still detectable 30 days after the trip. The city trips, by contrast, produced no such effect.

What Might Explain It

The exact mechanism as to why forest bathing has this effect isn't fully settled, but researchers point to a few likely contributors. Trees release airborne compounds called phytoncides, essentially the trees' natural defence chemicals, which previous studies have shown can increase NK activity when inhaled. Reduced stress and lower adrenaline likely play a role too, since chronic stress is known to suppress immune function. It's probably some combination of cleaner air, gentle physical activity, quiet surroundings, and the phytoncides themselves.

What This Means (and What it Doesn't)

It's worth being clear about the limits of this research. The core studies involved small numbers of participants, only twelve men in one, similarly modest groups in others, so they establish a promising pattern rather than definitive proof. They also focused on short-term immune markers rather than long-term outcomes like actual cancer or infection rates. And most of the work was conducted by the same research group, so independent replication with larger, more diverse populations would strengthen the case considerably.

Still, the consistency of the findings across studies is notable: increased forest time meant increased NK activity and decreased stress markers. And city trips failed to reproduce the effect. If nothing else, it adds scientific weight to something that feels intuitively true, that unplugging and spending time in nature is good for you. Based on how long the effect lasted, the researchers suggest that a day-long forest visit once a month might be enough to help sustain the benefit.

You don't need a three-day retreat to see potential value. Even a couple of hours outdoors, put the phone away, with some gentle movement, seems to be the kind of low-cost, low-risk habit that's hard to argue against, even before the science catches up all the way.
